Rationale
Discipline-Based Art Education is a teaching approach formalized in the early 1980s by the Getty Center for Arts Education. The goal of DBAE is to develop students abilities to understand and appreciate art. DBAE is not a theory but a conceptual framework that incorporates many elements from other educational theories. In DBAE students are specifically opened to the relationships that art has with social, cultural, political, and economical movements. In addition, students get to formulate their own perspectives about the roles of art in society. The student also discovers the criteria for evaluating art through the analysis of visual artwork. Discipline-based art curriculum focuses in four different disciplines in order to develop perceptual awareness, critical thinking skills, problem solving and a clear understanding of art.

These disciplines are:
- Art Production focuses on the students ability to learn skills and techniques in order to create meaningful and original artwork.
- Art History focuses on artistic actions of the past and present as inspiration.
- Art Criticism focuses on describing, interpreting, and evaluating the qualities of art.
- Aesthetics focuses on concepts like the meaning, nature, value and impact of art.
